JP Traffic

A Justice of the Peace (JP) is someone of good stature and reputation in the community who serves as a judicial officer.  They are authorised to witness and sign statutory declarations, affidavits and also have certain powers to issue search warrants. When working with another Justice of the Peace they may hear matters in the district court such as depositions, Saturday courts and other District court matters. They have the ability to exercise powers to remand defendants in custody, grant bail, and adjourn court hearings.

In an effort to eliminate back logs in the court system a special court sitting for minor traffic offences called JP Traffic was initiated where two JPs preside in the capacity of a judge.
